Electronic Fences

Electronic Fences: Above Ground or Invisible (Below Ground) Fences

If you are in the market for an electronic dog fence, there are several factors to consider. First you should consider the needs of your dog and the requirements and restrictions in your neighborhood. Consider whether you live in a city environment where your dog only goes outdoors for short periods of time, and is supervised while it is out, or if you live where there are dogs running free, your dog lives outdoors all, or most of the time, or if there are threats from other animals present.

If you live in the city, and your dog is outside, there are several factors to consider regarding an electric dog fence. Should you choose an underground electric dog fence, you need to think about the fact that with this kind of electric fence, a dog is not protected from passers by who would pick up a dog that did not belong to them, or mistreat a dog.

If you love your dog, an electronic fence of this type offers no protection at all, and you could lose him, if his outside activities are not closely monitored. Another risk factor for use of an invisible electronic dog fence is that this type of fence for your dog, is a electronic containment fence. Other dogs in the neighborhood will not be affected, or kept out, by this type fence. If regulations in your neighborhood prohibit above ground fencing, and you have a dog, an electric fence of the invisible variety is better than nothing. Certainly, if you have a small dog that runs off while on supervised yard walks, these fences are great, and can allow your dog to accompany you with relatively little worry, while you are outside.

If you live in areas where other dogs run about unsupervised, or there are wild life issues, an underground electric fence for a dog will not do anything except keep your dog in. It will not keep other dogs out, it will not keep wildlife out, and if your dog is very big or very aggressive, it will, most likely, be able to run through an invisible electronic fence, and then be afraid to cross it again to get back into his yard.

For these reasons, in areas where fencing is allowed, and in all but the safest areas, you should consider the pros and cons of the best electronic dog fence for your needs. Many people cringe at the idea of an electric fence for dogs and ask, “Are dog electric fence safe alternatives for my dog?” The answer is that as long as your electric fence is a dog grade and not a livestock grade fence, and as long as your dog is not a very young puppy, elderly dog, or unhealthy dog with problems such as heart conditions, an electric fence such as a sure guard electric dog fence, are considered safe.
