Dog Fences: Fencing For Pet Safety

Whether you are a first time pet owner, or someone who knows that, though dogs are a part of the family, they’re not humans with special needs, a dog fence is an important part of responsible dog ownership. There are several things to consider before you decide what choice in dog fences will work best for you and your dog:

If you do live in a zoned area, you will have to find out exactly what the zoning regulations are, so that you do not waste time and money putting up a fence that you will only have to tear down. No matter what your fencing needs, you do have choices to make. In areas where visible fencing is not allowed, you may have no choice other than letting your dog outside only when you can take him for a walk on a leash, or choosing an underground dog fence.

Wireless fences for dogs have come a long way in terms of effectiveness, but there are still pros and cons to them. They actually work quite well in areas where your dog is only outside for short periods of time, and a traditional or portable dog fence can not be used due to zoning regulations or other prohibitive conditions. One thing to remember when you are choosing a wireless dog fence is that you really want one that will be effective and sticking to reputable manufacturers by purchasing wireless dog fences from manufacturers like Innotek dog fence or cky dog fence. By choosing the best fencing available, you enhance your dog’s safety.

Invisable dog fences work by transmitting a tone from an electric transmitter buried around the perimeter of your dog’s area to a receiver worn on your dog’s collar. Your dog quickly learns that once he hears the tone, he must not go any farther, or he will receive a slight electric shock. This shock causes no physical harm to your pet as long as your pet is not elderly or does not have heart problems, but an invisable dog fence can be problematic for dogs with either of these conditions.

Another draw back to invisible dog fences, is the fact that, while they can train dogs to stay inside their own territory, any dog or animal not wearing a receiver equipped collar, will not be kept outside your dog’s area. If there are wild animals or larger aggressive dogs nearby, your pet will not be safe without supervision even if you have installed wireless fencing for your dog. Another consideration is that if your dog is very aggressive or feels threatened, they may go past the barrier of an invisable fence. A dog will then be afraid to go back into their own yard, and are likely to wander off as a result.

While invisible dog fences do keep your dog inside, in the absence of extenuating circumstances, they are not the same as a secure dog kennel or fence, and they will not keep out the threat presented by other animals that may get into your yard. Further, they will not present any type of a barrier to bring attention to someone trying to nab your pet.
As a result, traditional fixed fences that keep out unwanted guests and animals while keeping your dog inside, are vastly preferable to wireless fencing for dogs.
