Choose Where You Snooze: Keys To Choosing A Dog Bed
Dog beds are a big decision! You wouldn’t want to sleep just anywhere, and neither will your pet, but an informed decision is the best decision when deciding on your dog bed.
There are so many choices of dog beds available, from discount dog beds to designer dog bed brands, so you want to make sure you find the kind that is the best suited for your pet’s lifestyle. Even though it may seem quite easy, there are actually factors to consider before selecting the right dog for your pet. You can purchase designer dog beds, orthopedic dog beds, or heated dog beds, but whether you are shopping for unique dog beds that will be a part of your décor, fancy dog beds, large dog beds, or puppy beds, there is something for everyone, and a little research can go a long way in making a good choice for everyone.
Though most people see no need to buy a designer dog bed, some might choose a unique dog bed, or look for cute large dog beds, since they are harder to tuck out of sight, or an orthopedic dog bed for dogs that are elderly or have hip or joint problems.
About the most important factor to consider purchasing a bed is where the dog will be sleeping. If you have a dog that will be sleeping inside needs will be quite different from dogs sleeping inside. You will want to select a room that’s large enough for a bed that will fit your pet, yet a place small enough to make your dog feel safe and secure. Keep in mind that if you will have a pet that is crated at night, there are long, flat crate beds that can be placed in the crate to make your puppy more comfortable.
There are a wide array of shapes and sizes of dog beds for a large variety of different dog breeds. It’s important to consider the size of your dog when you select a bed. Small breeds tend to like to feel snuggly and warm while large breeds prefer room to stretch and spread out. Many small breeds feel most comfortable in a bed with sides, or bumpers, that they can snuggle up against at night. Large breeds often do best with a flat feather pillow bed or cushion that they can just walk onto and plop down. Remember that there are beds made for the smallest and the largest dogs, with the cost increasing with the size of the bed.
Dog beds are available in canvas, denim, fleece, cotton, suede and even upholstery material, making your decision to find the right one even more difficult. If you own a long-haired breed, they will keep themselves warm year round, so a basic cool cotton or canvas is fine. For smaller or short-haired breeds that may get cold easily, fleece, suede or warm upholstery material can be good choices.
Keep in mind that some dog beds will be washable, usually meaning that the outside layer can be peeled off and placed in the washer. If you have a pup that sheds a great deal or that gets dirty easily, it may be important to also consider a fabric that can be washed easily without fading or shrinking.
